Announcements and Reminders
Win said the Rotarians of the week were Bee and Pam for all their wonderful programs.
Sandra reminded us about RYLA for sophomores and juniors in high school. She has applications with her at the meetings.
Doug asked us to sign-up to help with the speech contest(s). Club contest is on Feb 23rd and March 16th is the area contest. We will probably start closer to noon those days.
Sign up for Stop Hunger Now to stuff barrels. It will be on Sat 25th of February at New Brighton middle school. Interacters and other rotary clubs will also be involved.
Michelle reminded us the major fundraiser is May 5th. It is a fundraiser for Leo’s Haven. Live and silent auction items are needed.
She also reminded us about the Meals on Wheels Fundraiser. It will be Friday February 3rd  and tickets are $60. If there is enough interest we will do a rotary table.
Our speaker today was Mary Gourlay. She spoke to us about the new development that is coming to Aptos Village in the next year. She has a master’s degree from Harvard and is a Swenson development manager who has worked in the field of community planning for the past 20 years.

She presented a slide show that covered the development. She showed us the site and what is happening in phase 1including Aptos Village Way  and the moved apple barn. There will be a village common, 7-10 commercial tenants and three or four types of residential housing. The area where the apple barn was will be the village green. A lot of work has been done on the barn. New Leaf community market will also be there occupying the apple barn and also the ground floor in another building and office space. Across the village green will be restaurants, an ice cream or yogurt shop and other shops with outdoor seating.
The residential units will vary in size. 15% of the homes are affordable housing.  Smaller units will be 800 square feet. Cluster homes are the largest at 1800 sq ft. Parking includes parking lots, street parking and a residential garage behind the commercial building. There will be over 480 parking spaces.
Parade street will connects from Soquel to Aptos Village Way.  A couple hundred tenants in total are expected.  Village core homes will be above the commercial space; 3 condos and 7 residential lofts.
There will be rain gardens and bioswales. The well that many of us wondered about is for redundancy and future water supply.
