Tim introduced our speaker today, Glenn Pomeroy from the CA Earthquake Authority a publicly managed but privately funded entity. He spoke to us about the risk of earthquakes (99.9% in the next 30 years) and the need for earthquake insurance which is not covered by a traditional homeowners policy.

CEA has lowered their rates and expanded their coverage in the past year. There are now many choices of deductibles and types of policies. Coverage is now expanded all in the past year. Used to be just 15% deducible and building value. Now  they provide choices of  to 10 to 25% deductibles. There are higher amounts for personal property and loss of use coverage. It also comes with $1500 of emergency repair coverage. No deductible for this part.

Mr. Pomeroy reminded us that there is no out of pocket actual cost for the deductible, just the amount of damage that has occurred.  Their website,  EarthquakeAuthority.com, has all the information including a calculator. For example for a $600,000 house the rate could be as low as a few hundred dollars a year depending on the amount of the deducible you choose.
