The Aptos Library asked us about participation  in a program where people to read books and discuss them with kids. To find out more or if you want to participate, you should attend the food and wine reception on Aug 9th  5-7 at the library on Soquel Drive.

Two of our RYLA participants, Matt DeCamera and Izzi Pryce, shared with us their RYLA experience (see photo above). They were divided into 6 families with about 30 people to a family.  They participated in workshops including service, band and choir, speech and debate entertainment health and wellness and sports and fitness. Their families put on a performance and planted succulents around the campus. They also worked on a project to help underprivileged women, one about mental health and appreciating themselves. The both stressed that it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Two red badge members, Kyle Sharp and Craig Matthews, also shared their stories with us today.

 .

Craig was born in Fort Ord. He spent most of his life in San Jose, graduating from San Jose State. He was at Stanford Hospital for three years then went to work for Hitachi data systems for 19 years. When he left there, he went to work for an Israeli software company and retired in 2000.  He has three grown sons and currently lives slightly inland from in La Selva Beach.  He loves sports especially backpacking and climbing and he has climbed all over the world.  His wife works in our pro shop!

Kyle grew up in Hollister. About the age of 12 he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and while in the hospital he made a decision to train to play college basketball. He was recruited to the University of Montana on a full basketball scholarship and  while there, they won an NCAA tournament. After college he was brought on at Edward Jones and a financial services advisor. He married a local girl and has a son who is a year and a half old.

We are happy to welcome both of these new members to the club!
