FIELD TRIP: Kevin Weatherwax, Piatt scholar
UCSC Field Trip

Kevin is in his 4th year of studies towards his Ph.D. degree in the department of Computational Media. He will use the fellowship support to further his research and he welcomes additional support to balance the need of his studies with a young family.

Kevin studies how assistive technology can be leveraged in support of work and study practices of neurodivergent adults. His faculty advisor, Kathryn E. Ringland, has the highest praise for his academic curiosity and for his engagement with the community.

Kevin had to overcome many obstacles before he embarked on a PhD in engineering, and now draws on his experience to study ways in which neurodivergent people engage with technology and media, in order to be successful in their scholastic and professional pursuits.

Kevin is a graduate from Santa Cruz County Office of Education, Y.E.S. School (2004) and he earned his BA in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz. In 2018 he started his doctoral studies in the department of Computational Media here at UC Santa Cruz.
Kevin won this fellowship thanks to his remarkable academic record, his strong desire to champion an underserved community, and his clear leadership and mentoring skills that have become indispensable in his lab.
