The speaker today was Patrick Dimick.

Image He is a home grown professional and Aptos High School attendee.  He has been part of the Sheriff’s office for 17 years. He spoke about what Sheriff’s office is doing currently and crime prevention in Aptos.

Officer Dimick gave us an overview of where the Sheriff’s office is today. He said their beautiful new facility makes them much more efficient in getting evidence processed. In the future they hope for a lab to be able to do forensic analysis as well as one-site crime scene investigation.

He put in a plug for Next Door.. today’s neighborhood watch. It gives us direct access to Sheriff. Members can posts things pertinent to specific neighborhoods. It spreads information and makes the neighborhood a safer place to be.  In addition a new program will train volunteers to come out to your house and go down a check list of ways you can improve the safety of your home. It will be up and running in Aptos in May.

A new child safety program is also scheduled to begin in fall. The Sheriff’s office will be going to local Aptos schools (11 first grade classes) to discuss stranger education, internet education, etc. The purpose is to establish relationships with kids and parents and give them tools to use in bad situations.

Both the above programs need volunteers. If interested, he’ll send information to us about how to sign up to help. There is no maximum age. It involves three and a half days of training over a 3 week period. Driving, report writing resources, how to talk to kids (for child safety programs) etc are all covered.

The program concluded with a lively discussion about other current crime prevention and detection issues in the community
