Announcements and reminders
Rotary is dark next week (July 2nd). Happy anniversary Al and Shari!
Al announced we need more 4th of July volunteers. See Tim to sign up.
Gloria Garry, past president of Freedom Rotary, announced that a trip to Vietnam is happening next month with InterAct students. They will distribute indestructible soccer balls to students there. If you would like to contribute, let us know.
Scott Gillette was welcomed as a new member. Full induction ceremony will be in two weeks.
Rich Hamlin was Rotarian of the Week for writing all the checks for our awards recipients today!! ( see some of them below!)
Claire McAdams announced the recipients of this year’s Rotary grants. These included:
Aptos History Museum which displays local history items and offers educational programs to third graders on local history.
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). Funds will train people to be advocates for children in foster care.
Coastal Watershed Council which does water quality monitoring. Fund will go towards San Lorenzo River watershed.
Community Bridges Funds will go to Meals on Wheels which serves and /or delivers 150,000 meals every year.
Digital Nest addresses issues about accessing technology and building up skills of youth including building websites. 360 members have signed up.
KIDS Foundation serves youth from birth till 21st birthday in tri county area. They pay for critical needs.. eg building wheelchair ramps, .
Helping Hands, a program of the volunteer center, helps senissr repair their homes and keep them updated. They have installed 658 grab bars.
Homeless services center houses people and keep them housed.
Learn to Discover provides technical education for kids (STEAM program) as well as science based classes. It has offered courses to over 2000 children,
Literacy Program is a program of the volunteer center. There have been 408 students served and 239 tutors trained.. They have 78 people on waiting list. They are always looking for volunteers!
Mid County Pony baseball is for 13 and 14 yr old kids. It brings kids together from Capitola and Aptos. Funds will go to keeping registration fees low and scholarships.
O’Neills Sea Odyssey This program turns Monterey bay into a living classroom. It served 5500 students in maritime educational efforts in the past year.
Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes Funds will go towards their pick-up truck fund to fetch produce from local farmers who wish to donate food.
American Red Cross, Central Coast Chapter Recently they have been installing fire alarms and have done over 650. Funds will go this home fire campaign..
Save our Shores Funds will go to beach clean ups. More than 1000 lbs of Aptos and Capitola beaches were picked up last year.
Safe School Project The purpose is to improve QOL for LGBT students and their straight allies at school. They also hold the queer youth music awards and work with social media to make their presence felt at school.
Santa Cruz Symphony They offer an extensive educational program in music, visiting 4th and 5th grades and offering free concerts. They bring recorded music to teachers in schools. Teachers can use these materials to teach about classical music to students..
Sienna House Maternity Home This is a residential program for homeless pregnant women..
Unravel pediatric cancer. Brings awareness and funding to pediatric cancer research.
Watsonville Wetlands Watch is engaged in restoration and community engagement in wetlands in south county. Our funds will be used for Summer intern program.
