The very cute little Tyler Burke (Pam Goodman’s son) introduced our speaker,  Lisa  Smiley. She’s a professional face painter who has been doing it for almost 20 years.  She started off with nothing then ended up hiring her whole family to work for her, as well as twelve employees during the season (she is hiring now!)  In Monterey, she worked on Cannery Row and the Wharf as well as many festivals. Now she is at Boardwalk seven days a week from spring break until Labor Day. She will be opening a henna booth there this season also.

She demonstrated on Keith how she did a tiger mask which won her first place in a national competition in 2008. She has also won awards for body  painting. She works on contracts for parties, generally charging around $150 with 18-20 children per party. At the Boardwalk she charges by the face.  It costs from $5- $20. She uses vegan paint, the best she can get on market which is hypoallergenic.

We were all impressed with her business acumen. On the proceeds from her business she bought and paid off the mortgage for her house in Santa Cruz and is booked up as much as a year in advance for special occasions like Halloween.

She passed around a sample of all of her designs.  There were lots of varied designs as well as henna designs to choose from.  (And Keith looked amazing! See photo!!)Image
